How to Measure Your Roof Space for Solar Panels

One of the easiest ways to estimate your roof space is by using Google Maps. It has a built-in measurement tool that can quickly help you get an accurate idea of your available surface area for solar panels. Here’s how:

Did You Know Google Maps Has a Hidden Tool for Measuring Roofs?

One of the easiest ways to estimate your roof space is by using Google Maps. It has a built-in measurement tool that can quickly help you get an accurate idea of your available surface area for solar panels. Here’s how:

Step 1: Open Google Maps

Go to Google Maps and enter your business address.

Switch to Satellite View by clicking the satellite icon in the bottom left corner.

Step 2: Activate the Measurement Tool

  • Right-click on your building’s rooftop.

  • Select "Measure Distance" from the dropdown menu.

Step 3: Outline Your Roof Space

  • Click around the edges of your roof to create an outline.

  • Google Maps will automatically calculate the total area in square meters.

This method provides a fast and easy way to estimate your usable roof space without any special tools!

Other Ways to Measure Your Roof

If Google Maps doesn’t work for you, here are some alternative methods:

1. Check Your Building Plans

If you have access to your building’s blueprints or architectural plans, they will likely include the exact roof dimensions. Simply look for the total surface area in square meters.

2. Measure Manually

If you can safely access your roof, you can measure it yourself:

  • Use a tape measure to record the length and width of the roof.

  • Multiply these numbers together to get the total square meterage.

  • If your roof is sloped, adjust for the angle by multiplying by a pitch factor (e.g., a 30° roof increases surface area by about 15%).

3. Use a Roof Measurement App

Several smartphone apps allow you to estimate your roof size using augmented reality or image recognition. Apps like RoofSnap or Hover provide accurate measurements using just a few photos.
